Not a bad morning on the water

Vancouver Salmon Fishing has been fair to good, our guests Mike and Erin were out this week and managed to land a couple nice keepers and some crab to take home. Not bad for a day on the water in middle of February. Sturgeon fishing has been excellent this past week, lots of fish being caught and the weather is great. One of our clients was out fishing sturgeon this week and managed to land his biggest fish to date, congratulation Kevin on landing an 8ft 10" and 10 footer in the same afternoon. Kevin took one of our sturgeon seminars last spring and credits his success to the knowledge he gained. Our next Sturgeon workshop is April 26, you can sign up online by e-mailing sts@guidebc.com

Fraser River Pre-season Estimates Just Arrived

2015 Sockeye & Pink Run Pre-Season Estimates have just come in. Looks like we will have another great year of salmon fishing on the Fraser River.

The Sockeye Pre-season estimates looks like this.

Low or 10% – 2.3 million, 50% probability 6.7 million 90% at 23.5 million fish. At 2.3 million there would be no recreational fishery, at 6.7 there would be some opportunity made available for recreational sector, 23.5 million and it would be similar to last season.

The Pink Pre-season forecast looks like this

Low- or 10% 7.6 million, 50% probability 14.4 million, 90% at 27 million. The average pink run is around 13.8 million so the 50% estimate is just above average run size.

The total run estimate for Pink and Sockeye at the 50% probability is over 20 million salmon returning to the Fraser River so I would safely say we are going to have another great season of fishing for both salmon and sturgeon.

Can’t wait for Summer.

Feb 10 Fishing Report Update

Fishing in Vancouver and Fraser Valley is starting to pick up, with the warm weather we have been experiencing, the fish have been active. Sturgeon, Steelhead and Salmon Fishing have all been better than average for early February, see detailed report below.

Vancouver Salmon

Salmon Fishing has been fair to good this past week, winter Chinook are being caught in Vancouver Harbour as well as the Gulf Islands. The Pro Staff Team at Gibbs is on the water on a regular basis and have been reporting some great catches using the new Guide Series Flashers trolled in front of Silverhorde & G-Force spoons. The key to success is trolling near the bottom whether you are using spoons or bait.

Fraser River Sturgeon

Sturgeon Fishing has been fair to excellent this past week, some great reports from last weekend and Monday was a great day on the water with lots of sturgeon between 3 to 4 feet with the occasional fish over 5ft. Best bait was lamprey eel and chum roe fished on the bottom with small offerings. During winter months it is advisable to downsize your hooks and baits for best success.

Fraser River Sturgeon Seminar dates have been announced, this seminar is a 6 hour day on the Fraser River with STS Guide Vic Carrao.

Learn all about:

  • Reading the bite & setting hooks
  • Rods, reels and advanced riggings
  • Fish feeding habits, bait selection
  • Proper handling of large fish
  • Sturgeon migration and movement
  • Safe anchoring techniques & hot spots

Day includes 6 hours of instruction and fishing

The cost of the seminar is $175.00 per person

Vedder River Steelhead

Steelhead fishing has been excellent so far this season, lots of fish being landed both wild and hatchery. Water levels are very high and as of yesterday the river was quite dirty and not really fishable. If the rain holds off we should see some decent water conditions by the weekend. Lots of stories of anglers not respecting others while fishing for steelhead which is sad to hear but not unexpected. The Vedder can be very busy during steelhead season so if you have the urge to step in front of another angler who is fishing their way down a run, step back and allow them to finish. The polite thing to do is to step in behind and follow then through the run.

STS Guide Braeden Szlabon with a beauty Vedder Steelhead caught a few days ago.

BC Boat & Sportsman Show is only 25 days away, please drop by and say hello at our booth or drop by the Stage, Vic will be talking about everything to do with Fraser Valley Fishing including Salmon, Sturgeon and Steelhead.
