Thomas is still out slaying steelhead on a daily basis, here is a short clip from yesterday.

Vedder River Steelhead.
Water conditions have been up and down but the past few days we have seen water conditions stabilize. Steelhead fishing has been fantastic the past few weeks with many fish being caught throughout the river.STS Guide
Thomas Rutschmann has been hitting the water daily producing fish on almost every outing. Dialing the river in is very important early season as this is what makes the slower weeks more productive. Thomas is nearing 70 fish for the season which is great for any Vedder River Steelheader.
It looks as though we are going to have clear conditions for the next week so low clear conditions require lighter leaders, smaller baits. If the water does rise and color with the rain, you can up the anti and try some of the larger artificial baits like Pink Rubber Worms, Gooey Bobs and our favorite, Roe Sacks.
If you’re looking to get out on a guided trip, we offer daily guided trips on the Vedder, gear or fly. Our instructional trips are the most popular with locals as our expert guides can teach you all you need to know about reading water, learning the Vedder and most of all, how to catch Steelhead,
Chehalis River
The Chehalis has been fishing well for steelhead and Cutthroat Trout. Most of our local anglers will target Steelhead in the Lower Canyon or Just above the Chehalis Bridge. Both areas have been producing fish. Cured Salmon eggs, Shrimp ( table or sand) are both working as is artificial like wool, jensen eggs and gooey bobs.
Fraser River
The Fraser River is in excellent condition, water clarity is 3 to 4 feet, temperatures are just above freezing. We did a sturgeon trip on Friday last week and managed to land 17 sturgeon, most were smaller fish be we did get several over 5ft. Winter on the Fraser can produce some great Cutthroat fishing if you’re willing to put in the time. Most anglers who winter fish on the Fraser are fly fishing or casting small spinners. For fly fishing I prefer winter stone flys, small minnow patterns or my favorite; pheasant tail nymph with a bead head. Try fishing some of the back water just off the edge of the main flow, this is where we do our best fishing.
Vancouver Saltwater Salmon fishing
Winter Salmon fishing has been fair to excellent the past week. Good numbers of Chinook are being caught in Vancouver Harbour with a fair number of keeper size Chinook. Finding the bait fish is the key, find the bait and you will hook fish. Hoochies, Spoons and bait fish have all been producing fish, trolling near the bottom has worked well. Our new 265 Express is geeting rigged and almost ready to hit the water, If your looking to get out and catch some salmon, February is a great month.

Report for January 23
Vedder River Steelhead
The fishing has been amazing the last couple days with the river coming into shape since the high water. Its like a new river out there with lots of amazing holding water. The fish are really responding well to big baits with lots of color. 6 inch worms , magnum BC orange gooey bobs and big roe sacks are definitely working well…on Saturday between 3 of us we had 16 fish to the hand. The next few weeks should be great fishing if the river stays in shape.
If you are looking to improve your steelhead catch rates, STS offers private one on one and small group instructional steelhead seminars. These seminars take place on the river by one of our top steelhead guides. If you would like more information, please call or e-mail us.
Fraser River Sturgeon
Sturgeon often tail walk once hooked
With all the rain the past few weeks the Fraser has been quite dirty with lots of logs and debris. I was going to put a boat in the water a few days ago but when I saw the mess in the river I changed my mind. I don’t think it is worth the effort right now as the conditions are just not that great. Maybe a couple more weeks and we might try a day out for tagging sturgeon.
Chehalis River
We don’t get a ton of reports for this river but from the few that I am getting, it looks like they are having a good return of Steelhead. Talking to the Chehalis Native Band it looks as though they are trying to get more involved in the hatchery to help keep production as high as possible. As we know provincial cutbacks are always a concern and it seems as though our hatcheries are the first to see funding reductions.
Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing
Salmon fishing has been quite good out in Vancouver Harbour and Gulf Islands. One of our associate guides hooked into quite a few fish this past weekend landing a boat full of keepers. Most of the action was near Gabriola Island but Vancouver Harbour also produced a few nice fish.
Our new 26ft Grady White hits the water this week for it’s maiden voyage, we are looking forward to getting her out on the water. We just installed a diesel heater in the cabin so fishing during winter months will be comfortable. If your wanting to get out on the water, give us a call.
Our boats are in the water ready to to charter
Winner of our Rod & Reel Package was Chris Bird of Langley. Chris entered our free draw and took home a Mooching rod & reel combo worth over $250, congratulations Chris.
Ride to Conquer Cancer
As many of you know, the ride to conquer cancer is a fund raising event to help raise money for cancer research. Last year my youngest daughter and I did a 260km bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle to raise awareness for this great cause. Many of our good friends and clients supported us by making a donation to our Ride to Conquer web page, in 2010 we raised $11,000. This year we are again, riding to conquer cancer, please support our ride, you can make a donation at www.conquercancer.ca/site/TR/Events/Vancouver2011?px=2331358&pg=personal&fr_id=1371
