Fishing update for March 22

Just returned from a week in Edmonton, man I’m glad I am back in BC. It was a beautiful day today, 12 degrees with some sun and cloud. Although I didn’t leave the office all day it was still nice to walk outside and see trees and mountains. Anyway I would imagine your looking for a update fishing report so here it goes.

Fraser River Sturgeon

We had a large group out this past week, 5 boats with 22 anglers all trying to catch that monster sturgeon. Our Top boat for the day was Tom with 22 fish ( not a surprise) most of the other boats managed between 4 to 8 fish. A couple fish in the 6ft range but most of the fish were between 2 to 4 feet. Thomas has been out all week fishing sturgeon and most days resulted in 8 to 10 fish although the last two days was a bit slower. Best bait has been Ulichons and eels but a few fish also caught on salmon eggs.

Vedder River Steelhead

Steelhead fishing has been fair to good, water clarity has been a bit off but that is expected when we get this much rain. It was a beautiful day today so the river should be in good shape by tomorrow or Wednesday. Quite a few anglers have been trying their luck with the fly rods, some success but don’t expect the same results as you would get with using a bait casting rod and cured eggs. As water and air temperatures rise, steelhead will become much more aggressive making the fly rod a very useful tool. Remember to fish the run all the way through as more often than not, those bigger fish are holding in the tailouts in knee deep water.

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing.

Well, the fishing remains good in our local waters. After a bit of a slow period in early February the fishing seems to be rolling along well with good catches by ourselves and local guides. Good numbers of winter springs are feeding actively in the harbour and we are also getting great reports from the Gulf Islands. This fishery will stay steady well into April as we have had some of the best winter spring fishing in the months of April and May. We will start to shift gears in late April and into May to more of an offshore fishery on the south side of Bowen Island and the outer reaches of the harbour for some of the early Squamish Springs. These bad boys are plentiful and can be BIG. Gulf Islands will just keep getting better from now until June. If you are looking for a seafood safari give us a call and we will do our best to get you some salmon and crab for the table and a have a great time doing it.

Hells gate Jet Boat Tours

Our 28ft twin engine jet boat is out of storage and back onto the water. We are now booking for both spring and summer runs to Hells Gate. If your planning a trip with me in my twin, you better book soon as most weekends are gone and weekdays are going fast. We are also booking canyon sturgeon charters with me in the big twin so come join me this summer/fall for some great canyon fishing.

Fishing Report for March 8

First I would like to thank all of you who dropped by our booth at the 2011 BC Boat & Sportsman Show this past weekend. We had a great turn out all weekend. It was great to see all of you and for those of you who donated to our Ride to Conquer Cancer Fundraiser, thank you so much. We raised a total of $740 between our T-Shirt Sales and weekend draw for Vancouver Island fishing trip with Murphy Sportfishing.

I also want to thank Mark Pendlington ( BC Sportfishing Show) for putting on a great show. This was the first time I have worked with Mark (Ask the Experts Panel) and it was a pleasure. We did three shows with great turn out and audience participation.

Next stop Edmonton Boat & Sportsman Show March 17 to 20, please drop by our booth and say hello. Also at the show this year for the first time is Hells Canyon Marine Jet Boats ( HCM) They will have 3 tricked out boats at the show including a 18ft rock hopper. Should be a Great Show.

Fishing report for March 8th

Vedder River Steelhead

Water conditions are currently low and clear throughout the river, with expect rains later this week we could see some color and even a slight rise. This would not be a bad thing as we could use some color in the water. Our guides Thomas and Gerry are both reporting a decrease in angling success due to the clear water conditions although Gerry landed 3 last night and Thomas hooked 1 and lost it near the shore. If your heading out, best to fish early morning or late afternoon as fish seem to be more active in the low light. Just before dusk is your best time to be flogging your favorite water.

Local angler Wayne Williams with his first Steelhead in 6 years, after taking a guide trip with STS on the Vedder.

“Hey Vic, Thomas took us out last Thursday and showed my friend and I how to fish the Vedder, and then my buddy and I went out on Monday and look what I hooked into. Been trying to catch one for six years. Thanks Thomas and the guys at STS”

Thanks again Wayne Williams.

Fraser River Sturgeon

Our Spring Sturgeon Fishery gets going on March 15, we will be on the water daily and will keep you posted on how fishing is and what we are hooking them on.

We will have our boats back in the water moored at Mission so if your looking for a last minute trip, we can accommodate you. Our Spring Special is selling very well, $500 for 4 anglers fishing 6 hours, this a great deal as it is $60 less than our 2 person rate, this is a $180 discount off our regular rates for 4 anglers.

Take advantage now and book for your spring Sturgeon trip.

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing

Our Saltwater boat was on the water twice this past week, on both trips we hooked salmon but our last trip out we were into a hog that until the seal got hold of it. We estimate the fish to be in the 20 to 25 lb range but I guess the seal needed it more than we did. Same as last week. The usual spots along the West Van shoreline and among the freighters are still producing fish most days. Coyote spoons and glow variations of hootchies are all producing at depths ranging from 60 feet to the bottom. No real need for bait this time of year as these fish are not very selective. Lots of shakers are being hooked along with the odd keeper.
