Fishing Report for April 13, 2011

Vancouver Saltwater

We spent the entire week on the Fraser so I don’t have much to report on Vancouver Saltwater Scene. I did hear from several associate guides that fishing was fair to good for Chinook Salmon. Some of the larger Chinook are starting to show up around Bowen Island and moth of Capilano. Trolling near the bottom is a good bet for those larger fish but you might want to run a rod or two in the 5o to 80 ft range as well. These fish do suspend the bottom but also come up off the bottom to find bait.

Sturgeon Fishing On the Fraser

Wow, what a great week. We saw some excellent fishing this past week for sturgeon from 2 to 10 ft. On Monday we battled a large fish for 30 minutes, we finally got it to the surface when the rod exploded leaving us with nothing but a rod handle and reel. The sturgeons tail was visible so we have a pretty good idea when the tail is 3 ft that the fish was probably over 10 ft. Unfortunately we never did land the fish so it is only a fish story.

Even though we lost this big one, we landed more than our share of nice fish between 4 to 7 feet. Our group from Calgary went home with sore arms and some great fish stories of the big one that got away. The best bait seemed to be Ulichons but we also caught quite a few fish on Lamprey eel. Salmon roe also worked but I think Ulichons is your best bet.

The Parna family visiting from Toronto managed to land 17 fish on their one day trip. I think we beat their expectations by about 16 fish.

I have a feeling they will be back sometime soon.

We spent all day yesterday in the Canyon running to Hells Gate and doing a little sturgeon fishing, our group from Edmonton had blast and said it was a great way to end their 3 day trip. We landed two very nice fish, enjoyed a nice camp fire and had some wild and wet rides through some big rapids.

Steelhead Fishing on the Vedder River

Another great week on the Vedder, we hooked fish both on fly and gear. If your wanting to fish the Vedder for Steelhead you have 2 more weeks until the river closes to all methods and as of May 1 switches to Fly fishing Only . Our fly guide Thomas will be available for fly fishing guide trips, just give us a call and we will hook you up with one of the top fly guides in the valley. Keep in mind you have 30 days as the Vedder Closes to all fishing on May 31.

Once the Vedder closes we will turn our angling efforts over to one of our remote rivers for Sea-run Bull Trout. This fishery is as high of quality as you get in the fly fishing world. Getting there is half the fun, fishing the Upper Pitt is an experience you won’t soon forget, some say addicting. These sea-run Bull Trout average size is between 3 to 8 lbs with good numbers of fish in the 6 to 10 lb range.

To maintain the high quality experience STS will limit the number of anglers per day offered by our guiding service. You must book early if you are wanting to fish this spectacular river during primetime. Fishing weekdays is far more relaxing and gratifying although we will offer guided trips on Saturday & Sundays. Please book early to experience this great fishery.

Some pictures from the last few days on the water

I didn’t have time this morning when I posted the report so here are a few pictures from fishing this week.

Today we landed 5 fish in 6 hours, we could have easily hook double that but we were covering ground trying to fish as much river as possible.

My Youngest Daughter Deanna, her friend from Germany Mirium, and STS guide Chad Hammond.

Our new Islander reels are ready for the salmon season. Our 26ft Grady White is Moored near the Vancouver Airport 13 minutes from the best fishing grounds.

These Happy young anglers managed to land this fish with the help from Dad. Getting ready to land the big one, This fish measured just over 5ft

This picture would look way better if the boat was RED!! Al??? We laid the first foot prints of the year in the Canyon, time to book.

Fishing Report For April 9, 2011

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing

We were out fishing several days this week, fishing was not as good as last week but we did manage to find a couple small keepers in the 7 to 9 lb range. Lots of crab still in the Harbour so nobody went Home empty handed. On April 5, we took some of our friends from Vancouver Tourism out for a ride on the Fraser. We took our twin engine jet boat up the Fraser to Pitt Lake to view the Fjords but unfortunately the clouds and rain made visibility poor. We did manage to catch a sturgeon so all in all it was a great day.

If you would like to experience the lower Fraser river & Pitt Lake Wildlife Reserve, we offer private and group tours departing from the Delta Airport Hotel. For more information you can call or e-mail us or contact your hotel conseirge at Delta Airport Hotel or through Tourism Vancouver.

Sturgeon fishing on the Fraser

We have been out on the water all week, fishing has been good to excellent in the Mission area. On Thursday we landed 5 fish, lost a couple more but it was nice to see that 4 of the 5 fish were over 5ft. There has been some monsters hooked this past week so it looks like spring fishing has finally arrived. Best Bait has been Lamprey Eel and Ulichons.

Vedder Steelhead

Thomas was out on Thursday and landed 5 fish, if I could just get him to e-mail me pictures ( hope he reads this) I could show you some beauties. Water conditions were good but I’m afraid the forecast is not looking good. Thomas has been using shrimp mostly but then again you can use almost anything, the trick is finding them.
