Fishing report for May 23

Vancouver Salmon Fishing

Well it is nice to be back on the water, we sold our 27ft Grady White and have been without a ocean boat for a few weeks so we decided to rig up one of our river jet boats with downriggers until our new boat arrives in a few weeks. I am quite surprised how well our 22ft HCM works in the chuck, plenty of room for 4 anglers.

Fishing has been fair to good in the Vancouver area, most of the fish are coming from South end of Bowen, the Hump, QA and when water is calm Thrasher Rock.

This time of year spoons, hoochies and herring are your best bet. The fish we got on this trip came on a Purple Glow Flasher with Pearl Hoochie. Lots of Crabs still around, we limited out on every trip so far this year.

Fraser River Sturgeon

Water levels on the Fraser have increased slightly this week, lots of sticks in the water today and we expect the river to continue to rise over the next few days. If you plan on going out, watch out for the smaller sticks if you are running a jet boat.

Sturgeon fishing has slowed this past week due to rising river. Every fish we have caught has been stuffed full of Eulichons which only means fishing will be slow until these fish diggest all that food. We have fished from mouth of Pitt all the way to Aggasiz with same results, 3 to 6 fish per day on average with the odd 8-10 fish day. We are still on the water each and every day so if your looking to get out, give us a shout.

Trout Fishing

Trout fishing in the Interior and local lakes is really starting to pick up, some nice rainbows are being caught in the Merritt/Kamloops with Chronomids being the favorite. I also like fishing dragon fly nymphs close to bottom in early spring, can produce some of those larger fish. Local rivers are producing some Cutthroat like the Harrison but your best bet is to fish side channels and Harrison Bay out of the main current.

Our Pitt trips start up next week so we will keep you posted on how that system is fishing once we get a few days on the water.

This Picture was taken last June with Angelo Viola from Fishn Canada and Vic Carrao of STS.

Hells Gate Tours

Many of our tours have been cancelled due to high water and sticks and debree. We are now booking for August 2012 with many dates already full up.

If you are looking for a great day on the water, come experience the Fraser Canyon.

Wild and Wet Tours in the Fraser Canyon all summer long.

May 13 Update

Fraser Sturgeon

Fishing this past week has been very good on the Fraser, our best day was 19 sturgeon, yesterday we landed over 20 between two boats.

Most sturgeons are really fat as they have been feasting on Smelt. Seems to be some lamprey in the river as well, i was talking to the guys from the Pacific Salmon Commission boat and they have been catching some in their test fishery boat just above Mission. I guess that would explain why many of our fish have been caught using lamprey.

Vancouver Salmon

Salmon Fishing has been excellent this past week, some great fishing over at Gulf Islands, a few fish around South Bowen as well. All indications would lead us to believe that June is going to be a great month for salmon out in the Strait of Georgia. Our boats are moored at the Delta Hotel and Mission Harbour. Two strategic locations that put us at a great advantage for both salmon and sturgeon.

Trout Fishing

Our Pitt River trips start up in two weeks, this is a great trip for smaller groups wanting to experience a remote wilderness fishing trip. You can fly or spin fish for sea-run trout up to 10 lbs. Lots of dates are still available so give us a call to book.

Interior trout fishing is starting to heat up, we are licensed for over 50 lakes in the Merritt/Kamloops Region and offer day trips as well as over night lodging on a private lake.

Fishing Report For April 27

As I mentioned in my last report spring freshet has begun. If you watch the tides at Mission you will see that both the low tide and high tide water levels have increased. This usually means that the snow melt is consistent and we can expect water levels to continue to rise over the next week unless we get a real cold spell.

Lots of sticks and logs comes down the river, not so bad that it is dangerous but you do need to keep an eye out at the bow of your boat. With jet boats, plugging up is a real concern, one trick to reduce sticks entering your impeller is the rock your boat from side to side when you are driving over lots of debris. This method of driving pushes sticks way from your intake and will lessen the chances of taking a stick into your impeller.

It’s getting harder to find places to land fish as you can see with this picture taken this week. If you can’t find a place to land your fish , best to just release it beside the boat and get the picture next time.

Fraser River Sturgeon

This past week has been a real challenge due to rising river, we are still landing some very nice fish in the 4 – 6 ft range but we are working hard for every fish. Our average catch has been between 4 to 8 fish which is a bit lower than we expect for this time of year. That can change from day to day so it is still worth while to get out and give it a try. May can offer some great fishing so don’t let the rising river stop you.

Brian and Sabrina joined us this week from Westerrose Alberta for thier first ever Father/Daughter guided fishing trip. Although we only landed 4 fish on this day they did manage to land this beautiful 6 ft 3 inch sturgeon with Sabrina setting her own hooks. Like on all of our guide trips we encourage our guests to set their own hooks, yes we may land a few less fish but the experience of setting a hook into a monster sturgeon is what sturgeon fishing is all about.

Ernie and company fished with us for 3 days and this was just one of their catches measuring over 6ft. As you can see water clarity is not good so it’s a good thing that sturgeon feed by smell.

Vancouver Salmon

Not too much to report on Vancouver Salmon fishing, some fish being caught in the harbour as well as S Bowen. We had a couple charters go out this week with limited success , still doing well for crabs and prawns but salmon fishing has been slow.

Nothing like a day out on the ocean

Trout Fishing

We have had reports of fair to good fishing for Cutthroat Trout on the Harrison River, salmon fry are now hatching and making their annual migration west to open waters in the ocean. Our favorite fishery targeting sea-run Bull Trout is just around the corner, end of May through until Mid July is best. If you are visiting the Vancouver area anytime in June or July, this fishery is one you will want to experience. We fly and spoon fish for trout from 2 to 10 lbs, all catch & release fishery.

Hells Gate Jet Boat Tours

Due to sticks and debris in the water we have had to cancel our April 29 and May 5/6 Jet Boat Tours. We will open some dates for June and cross our fingers that water conditions will be favorable. If you are wanting to join us for a incredible journey through the Fraser Canyon, August and September are the two best months.

Keep an eye on our website as we make more dates available. http://www.hellsgatejetboattours.com

Hope you all have a great weekend.
