April 1st Fishing Report Update

This past week we have seen just about every type of weather possible except snow, lots of rain, some sunshine and a few wind storms thrown in for good measure. Despite all of this, fishing has remained solid through Vancouver and Fraser Valley. See below for detailed report.

Time to renew your fishing licenses, they are now expired so I have provided links to both freshwater and tidal, remember if you are fishing sturgeon above Mission bridge you will require a sturgeon tag along with your basic license.

Non -Tidal License – You can purchase your fishing license on-line at http://www.fishing.gov.bc.ca/index.html

How to buy a license, check out the Tutorial – http://www.fishing.gov.bc.ca/docs/tutorial_for_anglers.pdf

Tidal License – You can purchase your license at – https://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/nrls-sndpp/index-eng.cfm

As of April 1st, it is illegal to fish for sturgeon at night. This regulation has been introduced to curb the illegal harvest of sturgeon. It applies to the non – tidal waters of the Fraser and includes the Harrison and Pitt. Another new regulation for 2015/16 is that you are now permitted to use fin fish for bait in the Harrison and Pitt Rivers. Please refer to your 2015/2016 freshwater regulations for details.

Fraser River Sturgeon

The Fraser River is high and dirty with lots of logs and debris in the water, yesterday the Hatzic Hole and Flats area were completely jammed with logs, this morning looks better so I am assuming that it was due to heavy rains up north. Despite the conditions, sturgeon fishing has been nothing short of amazing with lots of nice fish being caught. Best baits have been Eulachon and Lamprey fish on the bottom.

Vancouver Salmon Fishing

Vancouver Salmon Fishing has been fair to good this past week, some nice Chinook being caught in Howe Sound as well as Vancouver Harbour. The new Gibbs/Delta STS UV Glo flasher has been working really well for local guides and anglers. This flasher was developed by Gibbs/Delta to address the effectiveness of UV and Glo tape under water. Many guides had been buying UV tape and adding to spoons and flashers so being the leaders in Saltwater fishing, Gibbs produced a Guide Series Flasher using these two products. You can now buy these Guide Series flashers at your local tackle store, my 3 favorites are STS, Bon Chovy and No Bananas.

Vedder River Steelhead

Freds Tackle in Abbotsford reports that the Vedder River is still in good shape, fishing was slower yesterday but should improve as water is dropping as we speak. Don’t forget that if you are fishing steelhead this weekend you will need a new license and tag for steelhead, fishing should remain good over the weekend and through until the end of the month until the river closes to gear fishing and becomes fly only.

We are now booking for our upcoming Pitt River Trout and Salmon season, most of our groups fly fish this river but we can also fish with light spin tackle for those anglers who prefer to cast spoons and spinners. Our season runs from June 1 to August 15, we fish for sea-run Bull Trout and all species of salmon that return to the Pitt River. Our regular rate for this trip is $850 for 2 anglers, includes full day departing Grant Narrows at 6am returning between 3 to 4 pm.

Come join us for the 2015 season, call or e-mail us to book your next guided fishing adventure.

March 24 Fishing report update

Spring has finally arrived so lots of activities going on right now, The BC Boat & Sportsman Show has ended for another season but for those of you looking for something a bit different there is a Rod & Gun Show taking place at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds on April 17,18,19. The format is quite different than the BC boat & Sportsman Show, one of the buildings will be vendors with the other will being a large swap meet for rod and guns. Check out their website at http://bcrodandgunshow.com/

Spring Fishing for salmon, steelhead and sturgeon have all been better than average, the Vedder has been producing some nice steelhead over the past few weeks and should continue through until end of April when river will close to gear fishing. The month of May is fly only but with early freshet the water might be too high for shore fishing. Vancouver Salmon fishing has been spotty but will begin to improve over the next month.

Sturgeon fishing has been excellent this past week, lots of fish in the 3 to 5 foot range with the occasional fish over 6ft. Word from the lower river near Steveston is that the Eulachons are starting to enter the river. The spring migration of Eulachon is what sturgeon have been waiting for all winter so over the next few weeks it really should start to heat up. Best baits will be Eulachon and Lamprey eel.

We currently have a Spring Sturgeon Special available to those anglers who would like to take advantage of the early season, $600 for 4 anglers for 6 hours, $750 for 4 anglers for 8 hours, this is $100 savings. We supply guide, boat and all fishing tackle on all charters. We also offer overnight packages and private lodge for larger groups.
