April 14 Fishing Report Update

Fishing has been excellent again this week, good numbers of salmon being caught in Vancouver area and sturgeon fishing has been nothing short of spectacular. The salmon fry are beginning to hatch and migrate down the Fraser River so trout fishing will begin to turn on over the next few weeks. Harrison Lake has been producing some nice Cutthroat as has Harrison River. See below for more details.

Sturgeon fishing has been spectacular this past week and should remain this way well into May. A bit of debris in the water but nothing too crazy. Eulachon and Lamprey Eel has been the best two baits but we are also getting a fair number on salmon eggs. If you have never tried sturgeon fishing on the Fraser, this is the time to get out and give it a try. Our average day has been in the double digits with a few days where our guides are landed 20-25 fish in a full day charter.

Vancouver Salmon fishing has also been very good, the Hump, Howe Sound and Vancouver Harbour have all been producing some great catches. Now is the time of year to start we start running a bit more bait and hootchies in addition to spoons. We usually run 4 rods and mix things up a bit to find the depth the fish are feeding and biting at. Usually the fish will be between 75 to 150 feet, but there are years where we get them as shallow as 40 feet and as deep as 180 feet. Good bets for spoons are the G Force No Bananas, Bon Chovy, Trailhead and Outfitter. Skinny G’s will also work in the same patterns. The GibbsDelta Guide Series Flashers will also be key in the murky water with the UV and Glow really making a difference.

Gibbs /Delta Tackle offer some of the best selection of flashers and spoons for Southern BC Coastal waters, you can’t go wrong choosing some of their spoons and flashers. Have a look at their website and head down to your local tackle store. Berry’s Bait & Tackle have their annual sale on this week offering 10% off any Gibbs Flasher so great time to pick a few up. Check out GibbsDelta tackle at http://www.gibbsdelta.com

I was up in the Fraser Canyon this past weekend and water was up about 15 feet from previous week. This would indicate the beginning of freshet (when snow begins to melt). Our peak season for our Fraser Canyon Adventure and Hells Gate Tour is from July 21 to Oct 15, I still have a few weekend dates and some Fridays. If you would like to join me in the canyon this summer, book early.

The full day in the Fraser Canyon includes the 136km trip to Hells Gate & back along with sturgeon fishing, shore lunch and some skeet shooting if time permits. Cost for the full day is $275 per person based on 6 or more with a maximum of 12 people. Excellent adventure for families, larger groups and corporate team building.

Hope you have a great weekend. Give us a call if your looking for a last minute trip.

April 4 Fishing report update

What an excellent start to April , the weather has been warm and dry and the sturgeon fishing has been excellent. STS Guides and local anglers have been having some great catches, most of our trips have been catching double digits and some larger sturgeon up to 8ft. Salmon fishing in the ocean out of Vancouver has been good and local trout fishing is just getting started. Interior lakes are starting to open up so overall we are looking at some great angling opportunities over the next few months. See below for detailed report.

This picture was taken by local angler Rick Clarke on Saturday morning while departing from Mission Boat Launch.

Fraser River Sturgeon Fishing has been excellent this past week, lots of fish in the 3 to 7 foot range with a few larger fish being caught. The Eulachon run ( small bait fish) looks to be a bit early this spring, we are already seeing some fat fish and it looks like the seals and eagles have moved in to the Mission area to begin their spring feeding. It also looks like the sturgeon have done the same as action has been nothing short of amazing this past weekend. Best bait has been Eulachon and Lamprey.

If you are looking for a quality day on the river, come join our team of 8 professional angling guides. We offer 4, 6 and 8 hour sturgeon charters with private guide and boat. We supply all the tackle so all you need is to dress for the weather and let us look after the rest. Rips depart daily from Mission Marina, Chilliwack and Harrison Hot Springs.

Vancouver Salmon fishing has been fair to good this past week. We have been running a bit of bait, but spoons still seem to be working best for us. We have been having consistent success with Skinny G’s (Outfitter, Bon Chovy, Sweet Georgia, No Bananas) and smaller 3.0 and 3.5 G Force Spoons. Guide Series Flashers as always are doing their job as per usual.

April is a great month to get out and do some local fishing. Give us a call or an email if you would like to get out!

Our summer Fraser Canyon Adventures are filling up fast, these trips are more than just your average sturgeon charter, we spend the day deep in the canyons of the Fraser between Yale and Hells Gate, fish for sturgeon, barbeque lunch and run some big white water. The cost is $275 p/p based on 6 or more, we still have a few weekend dates available and a few Fridays. Come join us this summer.

Hope you have a great week.

March 25 Fishing Update

Sturgeon fishing has been excellent this past week, lots of fish around the Mission/Chilliwack area. Looks like the Eulachons are making their way up the river now, lots of seals in the Mission area. Sturgeon fishing will just get better over the next few weeks and April should be a great month. We still have another 5 weeks of steelhead fishing left in the season and salmon fishing has been good so far out of Vancouver.

Sturgeon fishing has improved considerably over the past few weeks, lots of bait in the river which means aggressive feeding fish. For many years April /May were considered the best two spring months to catch big numbers of sturgeon but smaller average size. This trend has change slightly, we are still catching lots of fish but our size average has gone up and there are many more larger fish in the 6 to 8 ft range being caught. April is a great month to get out onto the water and give sturgeon fishing a try.

Steelhead season is winding down, still some great fishing on the Vedder and other local rivers but as the weather begins to warm, local rivers will rise and color up. Best is to get daily reports before heading out, call your local tackle store for current and up to date river reports.

Vancouver salmon fishing has been fair to excellent so far this season, could be some of the best local salmon fishing we have seen in many years. Not sure why but there are plenty of fish hanging around the Harbour, Howe Sound and Strait. Best method to target salmon is trolling flashers and spoons using a downrigger. Our favorite is the Gibbs Guide Series STS UV Glo with a G-Force spoon fishing hear the bottom in the Harbour area, 60 to 130 feet when trolling out towards Bowen Island.

Our Fraser Canyon Adventures are booking up fast, August/September are the two prime months, if the snow pack comes off early middle to late July might be good as well. We only have a few weekend dates left for the Fraser Canyon with Vic so if you are planning a trip up to Hells Gate, book soon. Our April Jet Boat Seminars begin April 2 and 3, both these dates are sold out but we do have 3 seats left for April 10. If you would like to book, please call Vic at 604-671-3474 or email us at sts

Have a great weekend.
