March 29 Fishing Report Update

I’m off to Edmonton for the second and last trip of the spring trade show season. This time I will be at the Fishn Hole Show at the Mayfield Center working for Pure Fishing. We will have a small display but if you drop by show you will find me at the Pure Fishing Booth ( Berkley/Fenwick) or selling rods and reels in the Fishn Hole Tackle area. Please drop by and say hello.

Vancouver Salmon Fishing

We had our new Grady White out today for an afternoon trip, weather was not that great but fishing was decent. Dan and Chad ended up taking home several nice Feeder Chinook as well as some Dungeness Crab. The salmon fishing will begin to pick up as we get further along in the season, we are now starting to head over to the Gulf Islands fishing for larger Chinook Salmon up to 30 lbs. We can also fish for bottom fish and crab as well. Todays Chinook were caught just outside the freighters in 70 to 90 feet of water, trolling spoons.

Vedder Steelhead

The last few days the river has been low and clear , fishing has been more difficult than the previous few weeks with our guides working much harder to find fish. Gerry was out last night as saw a few rising fish but no takers. We still have a good 4-6 weeks of steelhead fishing before these fish move onto the spawning grounds. Fly fishing, fishing with bait or artificial eggs are all producing fish. As we get closer to May trying using single jensen egg with white wool, it’s one of my favorite lures for April steelhead fishing.

Pitt River Trout fishing is approaching fast, we have a great season last year and expect another great fishery. June is our best month, book now before the limited dates are gone.

Fraser Sturgeon

I was out on Sunday with the family and had a great day, we didn’t fish much but did manage to use up 100 shot gun shells while shooting clay pigeons. We did fish for a couple hours and landed 1 – 4 ft sturgeon. Thomas was out guiding for us on Sunday as well and managed to land 4 or 5 fish, nothing real large. During the BCFR fishout there were several large sturgeon caught, one over 8ft which was measured and tagged and a reported 10 plus footer. Overall the river is fishing about average for this time of year, still need to work for your fish but that is expected. Best baits have been Lamprey and Ulichons, some fish on salmon eggs a well.

STS Guide Dan Macleod fishing the Fraser for sturgeon

Have a great week and weekend, I will update this report when I get back from Edmonton on Monday.

Fishing update for March 22

Just returned from a week in Edmonton, man I’m glad I am back in BC. It was a beautiful day today, 12 degrees with some sun and cloud. Although I didn’t leave the office all day it was still nice to walk outside and see trees and mountains. Anyway I would imagine your looking for a update fishing report so here it goes.

Fraser River Sturgeon

We had a large group out this past week, 5 boats with 22 anglers all trying to catch that monster sturgeon. Our Top boat for the day was Tom with 22 fish ( not a surprise) most of the other boats managed between 4 to 8 fish. A couple fish in the 6ft range but most of the fish were between 2 to 4 feet. Thomas has been out all week fishing sturgeon and most days resulted in 8 to 10 fish although the last two days was a bit slower. Best bait has been Ulichons and eels but a few fish also caught on salmon eggs.

Vedder River Steelhead

Steelhead fishing has been fair to good, water clarity has been a bit off but that is expected when we get this much rain. It was a beautiful day today so the river should be in good shape by tomorrow or Wednesday. Quite a few anglers have been trying their luck with the fly rods, some success but don’t expect the same results as you would get with using a bait casting rod and cured eggs. As water and air temperatures rise, steelhead will become much more aggressive making the fly rod a very useful tool. Remember to fish the run all the way through as more often than not, those bigger fish are holding in the tailouts in knee deep water.

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing.

Well, the fishing remains good in our local waters. After a bit of a slow period in early February the fishing seems to be rolling along well with good catches by ourselves and local guides. Good numbers of winter springs are feeding actively in the harbour and we are also getting great reports from the Gulf Islands. This fishery will stay steady well into April as we have had some of the best winter spring fishing in the months of April and May. We will start to shift gears in late April and into May to more of an offshore fishery on the south side of Bowen Island and the outer reaches of the harbour for some of the early Squamish Springs. These bad boys are plentiful and can be BIG. Gulf Islands will just keep getting better from now until June. If you are looking for a seafood safari give us a call and we will do our best to get you some salmon and crab for the table and a have a great time doing it.

Hells gate Jet Boat Tours

Our 28ft twin engine jet boat is out of storage and back onto the water. We are now booking for both spring and summer runs to Hells Gate. If your planning a trip with me in my twin, you better book soon as most weekends are gone and weekdays are going fast. We are also booking canyon sturgeon charters with me in the big twin so come join me this summer/fall for some great canyon fishing.

Fishing Report for March 8

First I would like to thank all of you who dropped by our booth at the 2011 BC Boat & Sportsman Show this past weekend. We had a great turn out all weekend. It was great to see all of you and for those of you who donated to our Ride to Conquer Cancer Fundraiser, thank you so much. We raised a total of $740 between our T-Shirt Sales and weekend draw for Vancouver Island fishing trip with Murphy Sportfishing.

I also want to thank Mark Pendlington ( BC Sportfishing Show) for putting on a great show. This was the first time I have worked with Mark (Ask the Experts Panel) and it was a pleasure. We did three shows with great turn out and audience participation.

Next stop Edmonton Boat & Sportsman Show March 17 to 20, please drop by our booth and say hello. Also at the show this year for the first time is Hells Canyon Marine Jet Boats ( HCM) They will have 3 tricked out boats at the show including a 18ft rock hopper. Should be a Great Show.

Fishing report for March 8th

Vedder River Steelhead

Water conditions are currently low and clear throughout the river, with expect rains later this week we could see some color and even a slight rise. This would not be a bad thing as we could use some color in the water. Our guides Thomas and Gerry are both reporting a decrease in angling success due to the clear water conditions although Gerry landed 3 last night and Thomas hooked 1 and lost it near the shore. If your heading out, best to fish early morning or late afternoon as fish seem to be more active in the low light. Just before dusk is your best time to be flogging your favorite water.

Local angler Wayne Williams with his first Steelhead in 6 years, after taking a guide trip with STS on the Vedder.

“Hey Vic, Thomas took us out last Thursday and showed my friend and I how to fish the Vedder, and then my buddy and I went out on Monday and look what I hooked into. Been trying to catch one for six years. Thanks Thomas and the guys at STS”

Thanks again Wayne Williams.

Fraser River Sturgeon

Our Spring Sturgeon Fishery gets going on March 15, we will be on the water daily and will keep you posted on how fishing is and what we are hooking them on.

We will have our boats back in the water moored at Mission so if your looking for a last minute trip, we can accommodate you. Our Spring Special is selling very well, $500 for 4 anglers fishing 6 hours, this a great deal as it is $60 less than our 2 person rate, this is a $180 discount off our regular rates for 4 anglers.

Take advantage now and book for your spring Sturgeon trip.

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing

Our Saltwater boat was on the water twice this past week, on both trips we hooked salmon but our last trip out we were into a hog that until the seal got hold of it. We estimate the fish to be in the 20 to 25 lb range but I guess the seal needed it more than we did. Same as last week. The usual spots along the West Van shoreline and among the freighters are still producing fish most days. Coyote spoons and glow variations of hootchies are all producing at depths ranging from 60 feet to the bottom. No real need for bait this time of year as these fish are not very selective. Lots of shakers are being hooked along with the odd keeper.

Fishing Report for Feb 24, 2011

Well I just returned back from Toronto and boy am I glad to be home. Every time I travel to another Canadian or US City to promote our great province, I gain an appreciation for where we live. There is no doubt we live in the greatest place on earth.

While attending the Toronto Spring Fishing Show I got to hang out with my great buddies Angelo, Pete and Mike Miller from the Fish’n Canada Show. These guys have to be the hardest working anglers I have ever met. They had two booths, one promoting the new US Reels and the other promoting Ontario Tourism. The line up to get an autograph stretched through the Isle ways, never seen anything like it. I even signed a few myself, I think someone confused me with someone who was famous, lol.

Speaking of the Fish’n Canada Show, STS has two shows airing this year on Global and WFN, Watch for Sturgeon show with Mike Miller and Bull Trout on the Upper Pitt River with Angelo Viola himself. Global TV airs Saturday mornings, check your local listings for times.

Vancouver Salmon Fishing

Well the winter fishing is still going steady for the feeder chinook in the harbour. The usual spots along the West Van shoreline and among the freighters are producing fish most days. Coyote spoons and glow variations of hootchies are all producing at depths ranging from 60 feet to the bottom. No real need for bait this time of year as these fish are not very selective. Lots of shakers are being hooked along with the odd keeper.

The size of fish this year seems to be larger than years before. The fish are fat and healthy and make for a great fight and great table fair. The flood tides and the high slack tend to be the best bet for hooking fish. Find the bait and you will usually find the feeder chinook. We have been out regularaly hooking several fish each charter, some days better than others but the crabbing remains very productive. Call us if you would like a great day on the water chasing these feeder chinooks and some great crabbing.

Vedder Steelhead Fishing

The Steelhead fishing has been excellent this past week, STS Guide Thomas Rutschmann is now at 162 fish landed which is nothing short of amazing. Water conditions are low and clear but lots of fish around if you know where they are holding. As this cold snap continues, down sizing you offering is very important. Lighter leaders and smaller baits and lures will help put more fish on the beach.

The above Picture is one of our good clients John who after a day on the water with Thomas, landed his first steelhead in several years. Hiring a guide for the day is not such a bad idea when your just not producing fish. Guides like Thomas are like hiring a tech geek to help you learn Facebook or fix your PC. They do it every day, live and breath their passion and are darn good at it. If you like to spend a day on the water with Thomas, give us a call and we can set you up.

Fly fishing for steelhead is one of lifes great challenges, ask any angler who has tried, it is not easy. I know this is going to sound sick, but Thomas was trying to challenge himself so he pulled out the fly rod a few days ago, poor Thomas hooked 2 steelhead on the fly in the first 20 minutes and went home disappointed, he was hoping that he would have to work hard for a fish that day. What can we say, this kid is one of the best, that’s why he is in his 11 year of guiding.

A minute for Bill Otway – Canadian Hall of Fame

Bill Otway for those of you who do not know, is one of British Columbia’s champions. A life dedicated to protecting fish and fishermans rights to sport fish, Bill worked tirelessly for all British Columbians and those anglers who visit this great province each and every year. Bill passed away recently which has left the sport fishing community with a huge loss, I doubt anyone could fill those shoes.

This past week I was attending the Toronto Spring Boat & Sportsman Show, on Friday morning there was an industry breakfast that to my surprise included ceremonies for the 2011 inductees into the Canadian Angler Hall Of Fame. It was my privilege and honor to be in attendance while our very own Bill Otway was inducted into the Angler Hall Of Fame. Bills Son and Daughter in-law were both in attendance to accept the award. I met with his son and he said that Mr Bill Otway while very ill was still working on projects and giving instructions right up until the end. That’s Bill all the way, never quit, never give up, a true Canadian Legend.

Don’t forget the BC Boat & Sportsman Show is coming March 4,5,6 in the Abbotsford Tradex Center, please drop by and see us at our booth. I will also be answering questions at the New Pure Fishing “ Ask the Experts Panel” on the main stage each and every day, Check the show guide for times. I might have a few freebees on hand as well so be sure to catch our show.

Remember to conserve your catch

Fishing Report for Feb 8, 2011

Vedder River Steelhead.

I Just got off the phone with our Steelhead Guides Thomas Rutschmann & Gerry Dewar. They both are reporting great conditions and a tone of fish in the system. From all indications this season has been one of the best in many years. We have had some great years so that is saying something. To give you an example, between Thomas and Gerry they landed 17 fish last week in 3 days of fishing, they don’t want to talk about how many they lost so we will leave it at that.

It looks as though we are going to have some showers the next few days then rain on Saturday. so water conditions should remain good through the weekend. The Vancouver Boat Show is on all weekend so that should lesson the crowds on the Vedder. While out fishing for steelhead, don’t be afraid of using some larger baits, Thomas has been using quarter sized roe bags and imitation gooey bobs and doing very well.

If you’re looking to get out on a guided trip, we offer daily guided trips on the Vedder, gear or fly. Our instructional trips are the most popular with locals as our expert guides can teach you all you need to know about reading water, learning the Vedder and most of all, how to catch Steelhead,

Chehalis River

The Chehalis has been fishing well for steelhead and Cutthroat Trout. Most of our local anglers will target Steelhead in the Lower Canyon or Just above the Chehalis Bridge. Both areas have been producing fish. Cured Salmon eggs, Shrimp (table or sand) are both working as is artificial like wool, jensen eggs and gooey bobs.

Fraser River

The Fraser River is in excellent condition, water clarity is 3 to 4 feet, temperatures have risen slightly from last week. We did a sturgeon trip on Friday last week and managed to land 17 sturgeon, most were smaller fish but we did get several over 5ft. Fishing between Mission and Chilliwack has been a bit slower then the lower river below Mission. Baits to try would include lamprey, salmon eggs & eulachon.

New Sturgeon Reel & Line on the Market

Spring sturgeon fishing is just around the corner, for those of you looking for a new sturgeon reel, Penn just introduced a inexpensive reel that produces 30lbs of drag which is as much as the Penn International Series. The New Fathom 60 Level Wind offers big line capacity 4.3:1 gear ratio and a 24 inch line retrieve while only weighing 25 oz. This will make a great sturgeon reel for the Fraser River.

Spider Wire Stealth Braid is now available in 150, 200 & 250Lb line rating. This new stealth braid is also available in high visability yellow which helps anglers manage rod movement and improves strike reaction time. Most of our STS team of guides used this line last season and were very impressed with the fishability of this line.

Spring Sturgeon Special

· From Feb 1 to March 31 – $500 – Fill the boat

· 6 hours sturgeon fishing, max 4 anglers per boat

· All fishing Tackle Provided

· Private guide and boat

· Fishing Licenses, Tax and Gratuity not included.

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon fishing

Winter Salmon fishing has been fair this past week. We managed to hook a few Chinook this week, our largest was in the mid teens but we did not get a good look at it as it popped the hook before we could see it. We did land a couple smaller fish but nothing to get excited about. Vancouver Harbour was fishing best, we did hook a few fish over by the Pink apartments as well. Yesterday the wind was up so we tried hiding in Tungstall Bay along with several other charter boats, unfortunately the fish were not thinking the same way.

Crab Fishing has been good, we have caught some nice large crab this past week. Most of the larger crab were found off the 80 ft shelf near the entrance to the Harbour.
