Wow, what a slow couple weeks of fishing. Honestly I can’t remember ever seeing such a slow spell of fishing on the Fraser. Both salmon and sturgeon fishing have been painfully slow. Sockeye run is pretty much over, counts are very low in the test fishery so I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Chinook Fishing has been slow but we are getting some nice fish and test fishery is showing some good numbers. Sturgeon fishing has also been slow but again if we work hard we are getting some nice fish. See below for detailed report.
Frank and Dorthy Normand of Winnipeg landed this 250 – 300lb, 8ft 1 inch sturgeon yesterday on the Fraser, even when fishing is slow, we can still find some amazing sturgeon.
Vancouver Salmon
Salmon fishing in Vancouver area has been slow but the last few days we are getting some great reports of Chinook and some Coho. The T-10 was producing some great Chinook fishing until the Whales moved in but I hear that they have moved on so fishing should pick back up. We are booked for the weekend but we do have some dates for next week available. Salmon fishing in the Vancouver area will start to pick up over the next week or two so if you are wanting to catch some bright hard fighting Chinook, that would be your best bet.
Fraser Salmon
Salmon fishing on the Fraser has been terrible, water conditions are still very high for this late in August and sockeye run is pretty much over for this season. Chinook fishing has been slow for the most part although there are some bars that are producing good results. Chinook counts are way up in the test fishery so that is good news, water is dropping fast so it is just a matter of time.
Over the next few weeks we will see a transition from summer fishing to fall salmon fishing. Local rivers will begin seeing their early Fall Coho & Chinook runs so we should start to see some nice fish on the Fraser. The Harrison Chinook/Coho start showing up in the Fraser in middle of September so we are really looking forward to that fishery. Hopefully we will, see some good runs of Fall fish and put this dismal summer behind us.
Fraser Sturgeon
Wow, what a slow couple weeks we have had, I’m not sure if I have ever seen fishing this slow for this long of a period. The past two weeks have been painful for us and most anglers we have talked to. We are getting some nice fish but catch rates have been well below our average for this same time period. I am getting phone calls and e-mails from lots of anglers asking me why it is this way and to be honest I don’t really have the answer. My guess is that the water is still very high ( but dropping fast) for this time of year and not much for salmon so far this summer. The good news is the last couple days have really picked up for us so hopefully this is a turn around for the upcoming Fall fishery.
Yesterday was our first great day in a long time, Tom Landed a nice 7footer, Thomas got some nice fish and I landed a big fish measuring 8ft 1 inch. Bites were much more solid than previous days and water has dropped far enough that you can now fish the tides in the Mission/Langley area and take advantage of that incoming tide. Fish seem to be moving up the middle of the river so that may be why anglers are not catching them, with lower water conditions we should be able to target these areas as water continues to drop.
Trout Fishing
We were up fishing the Pitt again this past week, sockeye are now on the spawn so we are only fishing for trout until the Coho move in. Most of our Pitt Trips are fly fishing but we do offer light spin tackle as well. We would like to welcome Casey Martin to our team of guides, Casey comes from Vancouver Island with a tone of saltwater and freshwater fishing experience. Casey’s 18 ft Woolridge will give us even more access to the Pitt in low water so we are really looking forward to the Fall run of Coho this year. Hells Gate Jet Boat Tours
Whitewater is big in the canyon, saddle rock, sailor bar and little Hells gate are all running big and lots of fun.
