Ride to Conquer Cancer Fundraiser – Last year my wife Teresa & I and our 2 daughters decide to fund raise for this great event. Many of our friends and family are affected by cancer including myself so we entered the Ride to Conquer Cancer which is a 260 km bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle. We enjoyed the experience so much and raised $11,000.00, most of which came from the Fishing Community in BC and around the world.

This years fundraising is already proving to be much more challenging, we need to raise $10,000 to enter the ride so we are starting early. STS Guiding is 100% behind this event and is offering some great prizes and gifts to those who donate.

Receive a Free Fly Rod/Reel Case with every donation over $15.00 – All you need to do is go online to the link provided, make a donation of $15.00 or more, then send me an e-mail and we can make arrangements to get you your rod case. We have 20 rod cases to give away.

Fishing Report for Feb 8, 2011

Vedder River Steelhead.

I Just got off the phone with our Steelhead Guides Thomas Rutschmann & Gerry Dewar. They both are reporting great conditions and a tone of fish in the system. From all indications this season has been one of the best in many years. We have had some great years so that is saying something. To give you an example, between Thomas and Gerry they landed 17 fish last week in 3 days of fishing, they don’t want to talk about how many they lost so we will leave it at that.

It looks as though we are going to have some showers the next few days then rain on Saturday. so water conditions should remain good through the weekend. The Vancouver Boat Show is on all weekend so that should lesson the crowds on the Vedder. While out fishing for steelhead, don’t be afraid of using some larger baits, Thomas has been using quarter sized roe bags and imitation gooey bobs and doing very well.

If you’re looking to get out on a guided trip, we offer daily guided trips on the Vedder, gear or fly. Our instructional trips are the most popular with locals as our expert guides can teach you all you need to know about reading water, learning the Vedder and most of all, how to catch Steelhead,

Chehalis River

The Chehalis has been fishing well for steelhead and Cutthroat Trout. Most of our local anglers will target Steelhead in the Lower Canyon or Just above the Chehalis Bridge. Both areas have been producing fish. Cured Salmon eggs, Shrimp (table or sand) are both working as is artificial like wool, jensen eggs and gooey bobs.

Fraser River

The Fraser River is in excellent condition, water clarity is 3 to 4 feet, temperatures have risen slightly from last week. We did a sturgeon trip on Friday last week and managed to land 17 sturgeon, most were smaller fish but we did get several over 5ft. Fishing between Mission and Chilliwack has been a bit slower then the lower river below Mission. Baits to try would include lamprey, salmon eggs & eulachon.

New Sturgeon Reel & Line on the Market

Spring sturgeon fishing is just around the corner, for those of you looking for a new sturgeon reel, Penn just introduced a inexpensive reel that produces 30lbs of drag which is as much as the Penn International Series. The New Fathom 60 Level Wind offers big line capacity 4.3:1 gear ratio and a 24 inch line retrieve while only weighing 25 oz. This will make a great sturgeon reel for the Fraser River.

Spider Wire Stealth Braid is now available in 150, 200 & 250Lb line rating. This new stealth braid is also available in high visability yellow which helps anglers manage rod movement and improves strike reaction time. Most of our STS team of guides used this line last season and were very impressed with the fishability of this line.

Spring Sturgeon Special

· From Feb 1 to March 31 – $500 – Fill the boat

· 6 hours sturgeon fishing, max 4 anglers per boat

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon fishing

Winter Salmon fishing has been fair this past week. We managed to hook a few Chinook this week, our largest was in the mid teens but we did not get a good look at it as it popped the hook before we could see it. We did land a couple smaller fish but nothing to get excited about. Vancouver Harbour was fishing best, we did hook a few fish over by the Pink apartments as well. Yesterday the wind was up so we tried hiding in Tungstall Bay along with several other charter boats, unfortunately the fish were not thinking the same way.

Crab Fishing has been good, we have caught some nice large crab this past week. Most of the larger crab were found off the 80 ft shelf near the entrance to the Harbour.

Vedder River Steelhead.

Water conditions have been up and down but the past few days we have seen water conditions stabilize. Steelhead fishing has been fantastic the past few weeks with many fish being caught throughout the river.STS Guide

Thomas Rutschmann has been hitting the water daily producing fish on almost every outing. Dialing the river in is very important early season as this is what makes the slower weeks more productive. Thomas is nearing 70 fish for the season which is great for any Vedder River Steelheader.

It looks as though we are going to have clear conditions for the next week so low clear conditions require lighter leaders, smaller baits. If the water does rise and color with the rain, you can up the anti and try some of the larger artificial baits like Pink Rubber Worms, Gooey Bobs and our favorite, Roe Sacks.

If you’re looking to get out on a guided trip, we offer daily guided trips on the Vedder, gear or fly. Our instructional trips are the most popular with locals as our expert guides can teach you all you need to know about reading water, learning the Vedder and most of all, how to catch Steelhead,

Both areas have been producing fish. Cured Salmon eggs, Shrimp ( table or sand) are both working as is artificial like wool, jensen eggs and gooey bobs.

Fraser River

The Fraser River is in excellent condition, water clarity is 3 to 4 feet, temperatures are just above freezing. We did a sturgeon trip on Friday last week and managed to land 17 sturgeon, most were smaller fish be we did get several over 5ft. Winter on the Fraser can produce some great Cutthroat fishing if you’re willing to put in the time. Most anglers who winter fish on the Fraser are fly fishing or casting small spinners. For fly fishing I prefer winter stone flys, small minnow patterns or my favorite; pheasant tail nymph with a bead head. Try fishing some of the back water just off the edge of the main flow, this is where we do our best fishing.

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon fishing

Winter Salmon fishing has been fair to excellent the past week. Good numbers of Chinook are being caught in Vancouver Harbour with a fair number of keeper size Chinook. Finding the bait fish is the key, find the bait and you will hook fish. Hoochies, Spoons and bait fish have all been producing fish, trolling near the bottom has worked well. Our new 265 Express is geeting rigged and almost ready to hit the water, If your looking to get out and catch some salmon, February is a great month.
