Feb 7th Update

February 7, 2012

Vancouver Boat Show this weekend, I will be working at the Humminbird/Minnkota booth so please drop by and say hello. If you are looking for a new fish finder or depth sounder, come see me as i will be helping Stevenston Marine in the electronics area. Should be a great show this year.

STS Doug Elias is selling some fishing gear, see below for details and contact info.

Fraser Canyon Sturgeon trips – I have been busy booking trips for our canyon sturgeon fishing, weekends are almost all gone. If you are wanting to fish with me in the canyon, don’t wait to book as dates are getting thin.

Steelhead

Thomas has been out pounding the Vedder and as usual, hooking lots of fish. Last weekend Thomas has a couple US clients out on the water and hooked this beauty just 10 minutes into the day.

Lots of steelhead in the Vedder right now so good time to get out. Weather is quite warm for this time of year, if it keeps up the fly rods will be coming out soon.

Sturgeon – No reports this week

Doug & Tom just returned from Mexico, see below for Doug’s Blog.

Hey Vic, well Angel and I are back to the grind after a week in Mexico. We had an awesome time relaxing and hanging with Tom and Jessica. It was a great way to spend my birthday. I have started my spring cleaning so if any one is looking for some new fishing gear I have some great deals on spinning rod combos and 4 TLD 20 lever drags spooled with Berkley 130# Big Game. You can reach me at doug.elias if you are interested. I haven’t had a chance to get out much yet but I will keep you posted once the rods are out.

Jan 23 Fishing Report

This past week we have seen just about every type of winter weather you could image, snow, rain, ice rain, gale force winds and today clear sky’s. Even through all this, some of our guides are still on the water catching fish. Crazy but I guess that is why they are considered some of the best rods in the valley.

Steelhead

Steelhead fishing has been "off the hook" according to STS Guide Thomas Rutschmann. Sounds like this week might be a good bet to get out there. See below for Thomas’s on-river report.

Hey Vic, Fishing was off the hook today with 12 hook ups between me and Chris it was amazing to say the least, I had a fish eat my float in the middle of the drift only to hook it the next cast…. We missed easily as many fish as we hooked… with a rare double header. The river came into great shape after going to mud the day before. We hit it perfect with 6 fish in the first 2 runs. We braved snow sleet rain and wind but that’s what it takes to catch steelhead. The river should stay in great shape with the cold and the mountains getting a good coating of snow.

That is one incredible day of steelhead fishing. As long as air temperatures stay cool, local rivers should stay in shape. If we get heavy rain or temps begin to warm, we will see some clouding of water clarity.

If you are looking to get out Steelhead fishing, the Vedder, Chehalis and Stave Rivers are your best bet this week. We have heard some good reports from the Chehalis as well as the Stave River. Salmon eggs and Sand Shrimp are both working well for guys who like to fish bait, if you’re like me and prefer artificials try using gooey bobs or single jensen eggs. For fly try using larger streamer patterns in orange, pink, purple or black.

Steelhead Seminars – Instructional guide trips are available all winter for only $250 for a private one on one instructional trip or 2 anglers for $175 per person. This includes 6 hours of instructional fishing for steelhead with fly or terminal tackle. Trips are available weekday and weekends throughout Feb & March.

Vancouver Salmon

Vancouver is one of the few places in British Columbia that you can catch salmon 365 days a year. Right now and through the winter you can catch Chinook Salmon in Vancouver Harbour and surrounding region, most of the salmon are between 4lb ( shakers) to 12lbs ( Keepers) with the occasional Chinook in the 16 to 20lb ( Slab) range. Vancouver Harbour offers fair to good winter salmon fishing from Jan through until the spring runs begin to show up. Crab and Prawn fishing is also very good in winter usually producing limits on every trip.

This past week as been very difficult to get out on the water, high winds have kept most anglers on shore. If you’re cabin fever is setting in, your best bet is to try some winter steelhead fishing on local rivers. You might also try some fly fishing on the Fraser or Harrison River but be careful as there is some ice chunks moving down river.

Fraser Sturgeon

No reports this week, the Fraser has been locked up with ice so not much going on. I am looking out my office window at Hatzic hole and it looks like ice chunks are starting to melt so it won’t be more than a couple days before the Fraser is safe to boat again.

We still have some seats available for our April Sturgeon Seminar and Fraser River Jet Boat Seminar. Both seminars are in April and are done in one day. You can e-mail us for more info or chekc out our website at http://www.guidebc.com

1. Mark Pendlington host of TV Show SportfishingBC, battling a monster Fraser Sturgeon while filming a show for the 2012 season. Keep an eye out for this show.

3. New Sturgeon Article – Last July my wife, two daughters and I packed up our back packs and went on an adventure of a lifetime. 5 countries in 5 weeks with 2 weeks traveling Africa and Mosambique. Anyway, had my small lap top with me so during my spare time I wrote a long overdue article on sturgeon fishing. I’m not a writer which not too hard to tell, anyway, hope you enjoy it. http://guidebc.com/articles/strategiesforsturgeon.asp

Hope you all have a great week, and keep those lines tight, and ears warm.

Jan 10 Fishing Report

Fishing Report for Vancouver & Fraser Valley

Vancouver Ocean

Vancouver is one of the few places in British Columbia that you can catch salmon 365 days a year. Right now and through the winter you can catch Chinook Salmon in Vancouver Harbour and surrounding region, most of the salmon are between 4lb ( shakers) to 12lbs ( Keepers) with the occasional Chinook in the 16 to 20lb ( Slab) range. One of our associate guides were out this week having good success fishing the Harbour. Most fish were in the 4 to 6lb range but they did manage to catch a few fish in the teens. Vancouver Harbour offers fair to good winter salmon fishing from Jan through until the spring runs begin to show up. Crab and Prawn fishing is also very good in winter usually producing limits on every trip.

Fraser Valley

Sturgeon

We were out on the water a couple days this past week, we managed to land 19 fish in two days which is pretty good for this time of year. Nothing larger than 4 feet but we had enough action to keep us busy on the rods. Sturgeon fishing is generally slow in winter months but if you put in the time it is still worth a try. Our boats are on the water year round so if you’re like me and cabin fever is already setting in, give us a call, we would be happy to get you out for a morning, afternoon or all day trip.

Steelhead (Vedder River)

Vedder River Steelhead fishing has been fair to good this past week, some nice fish taken in the lower river as well as the mid river area. Water clarity is 16 to 20 inches with water steadily dropping and clearing. Freds Tackle reports about 6 to 10 fish per day being weighed in which means that there is probably closer to 20-30 fish per day being landed. Although there are some nice steelhead in the Vedder it appears to me that we are off to a slower start than last year. Weather is calling for sunshine for the next two days so the river should continue to clear and drop until the next rain fall.

Chehalis River Steelhead

I was by the Chehalis the other day and forgot how beautiful this river is during winter months. I saw a few Coho stacked in a pool that still looked very clean. We have heard of a few early Steelhead and some great Cutthroat Fishing. The Chehalis fishes very well after a big rain, it drops and clears very quickly so the next few days should produce some nice fish. This is a great river system for fishing when Vedder River conditions are not favorable.

Harrison River

We did a Jet Boat Cruise on Sunday with a group from Mission to Rainbow Falls on Harrison Lake. It was a beautiful Winters day and everyone enjoyed the trip. Along the way we saw several Cutthroat rise near Kilby Park and as we got further up I was surprised on how many rising fish we saw. After talking with a few of our guides, we heard that Cutthroat fishing is good right now on the Harrison.

If you’re going to give it a try, I would suggest using minnow patters or flesh fly’s. You can also fish larger gear looking for Chehalis bound Steelhead. Cutthroat are nomadic and move around allot so when your fishing the Harrison spend a considerable amount of time watching the shoreline. If Cutthroat are feeding, you will spot them as we did on Sunday.
