August 1 Fishing Report

Fishing has really begin to pick up, whether you are wanting to fish salmon, halibut, trout or sturgeon we have the venue. Our Fraser Salmon and sturgeon charters are beginning to produce some good results, The west coast is on fire for both Chinook & Coho as well as Halibut and Ling Cod. Our fly fishing trips up the Pitt are producing some great results and we are hopeful that the Vancouver area will begin to pick up soon. See below for detailed reports.

Vancouver Salmon –

The Vancouver area has been slow the past week, although there are a few salmon being caught it has been a painful week. Some anglers are picking up Coho at the mouth of the Capilano River but they seem to be far and few between. Some reports of Chinook heading up the Fraser but again, very inconsistent. The Fraser area should begin to pick up at test fishery is showing some decent number of migrating fish. We did hear of some decent fishing on the Fraser so maybe for the next week or so that would be a better choice.

West Coast Salmon

The West Coast is fishing very well for Chinook, Coho, Halibut and Ling/Snapper. All of our charters are leaving with limits of most species and the weather has been great. Soon the Coho will start moving in shore and buck tailing and fly fishing will get really good. If you don’t mind a bit of driving, we have a great location that offers accommodations and some of the best fishing you will find anywhere on Vancouver Islands West Coast.

Fraser River Sturgeon & Salmon

The Fraser River is dropping fast and coming into good shape. Although water is still high it won’t take long to drop to normal August levels. Water clarity is poor but we have heard of several Chinook salmon caught bar fishing with spin n glo’s, also heard of a few fish caught bottom bouncing. Doesn’t look like there will be any sockeye openings this season which is no surprise as this is a low cycle year in the 4 year cycle. We are expecting a good run of summer Chinook so we should see some good numbers of salmon being caught on the Fraser by middle of August.

Sturgeon fishing has been a bit on the slow side with an average of 4 to 6 fish per trip. Although we are not catching big numbers we are catching some very larger fish. As you have probably heard there was a large sturgeon measuring 10 ft 10 inches ( fork length) caught recently in the canyon and a few fish over 9ft in the Mission area. I managed to land a very nice fish measuring 7ft 10 just the other day in the last few minutes of my guide trip.

This monster measured 7ft 10 to the fork and was caught seconds before pulling in the last rod for the day.

It pays to leave your rods in the water until the last second, the above fish was caught while I was reeling in the other rods to end our day. Never reel all rods in at the same time, let them soak as long as you can.

Fly Fishing & Light Spin for salmon & trout

This week has been amazing, we fished 3 days for trout and landed over 40 fish including some very nice Chinook and Sockeye on both fly and light spin tackle.

I have some space available for early next week so call me to talk about this trip. Water is dropping fast and conditions will change very soon so if you want to take a shot at it, give me a call or drop me an e-mail.

Summer fishing is just getting started, please give us a call or e-mail to find out more about the many fishing opportunities we offer. STS specializes in British Columbia fishing vacations and can find you the fish wether you are on the mainland, Fraser Valley or Vancouver Island

July 20 Fishing Report

We just returned from 3 weeks of cruising the East and West Coast of Vancouver Island. Although we didn’t do much fishing on the east side of the Island , once we got over to the west side, fishing was the main focus. As many of you already know, some of the best salmon fishing in British Columbia takes place off the West Coast of BC. Chinook , Coho, Halibut, Ling and Snapper are all readily available.

A portion of our holiday was spending some time at our new saltwater location on the West Coast. STS is now offering saltwater fishing vacations on the West Coast of Vancouver Island offering our clients an opportunity to fish some of the most productive waters in BC. If you would like more information on these charters, please give us a call or send us an e-mail.

Fraser Valley Fishing report.

Flooding concerns for the Fraser river are now over, water is still high but is now dropping and will continue to drop throughout the summer. Larger schools of salmon are now migrating up the Fraser heading for their home waters, one of the bright spots this week was the number of sockeye returning to the Chilliwack Lake system. This run of sockeye has been building since 2000 and we are seeing some good numbers of fish returning. DFO estimates between 36,000 and 400,000 but are fairly confident that they will meet or exceed 136,000 fish.

Vedder River Report

The Vedder River is still quite high but water conditions are excellent for salmon fishing. As mentioned above there are lots of sockeye in the Vedder but this fishery is not open for retention by recreational groups. All sockeye must be released unharmed so be sure you do not drag one of these fish onto shore.

These sockeye will bite traditional gear used for salmon fishing on the Vedder so please do not bottom bounce with long leader. To catch sockeye on the Vedder you should be using same float fishing methods that you would use for Chinook, Steelhead or Coho. Float, weight and 16 to 20 inch leader. There are also a few Chinook being caught, look for the spotted tails before you take any salmon out of the water.

Fraser River Salmon and Sturgeon

The Fraser river is slowly coming into shape, water is still very high but salmon migrations are steady and on time. Good numbers of Chinook are now passing through as well as Sockeye Salmon. Although we do not expect a sockeye fishery this season, you just never know until the bulk of these fish show up in the river. Chinook fishing is open but water levels are still a bit high for salmon fishing on the Fraser. If you are wanting to catch salmon, we are currently offering salmon fishing trips targeting Fraser Chinook out of our Delta Hotel Location. The QA and Bell Buoy off the mouth of the Fraser are both beginning to produce Fraser bound fish . We are also targeting Coho heading for the Capilano River. Our West Coast Salmon trips are in full swing so if you are looking for a 2 or 3 day trip and want sore arms, we have the perfect location for you.

Vic Carrao, Owner of STS Guiding with a beautiful summer Chinook Salmon.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing has been fair to good this past week, Tom landed a nice 7 footer on Wednesday and I was out yesterday for a short 4 hour trip and managed to land a nice fish just over 5ft. Best Bait has been Lamprey and Eulichons. I noticed lots of fish rolling yesterday in the Hatzic area which usually means that some of the larger sturgeon are beginning to migrate back into this area. I hooked into a monster fish yesterday but didn’t manage to land it.

We are now into summer and sturgeon fishing should start to pick up fairly quickly. We are expecting a First Nations Salmon opening this weekend which means sturgeon will now get some good feed when fish are cleaned on the shoreline. Along with this opening means nets in the river so please watch out for FN anglers drifting nets. If you see netting activity, please avoid anchoring nearby.

Vancouver Salmon Fishing

As mentioned above we are now targeting both Fraser Chinook and Capilano Coho. Although these fisheries are a bit inconsistent we do have some great days on the water. All Vancouver salmon trips depart from our Delta Airport Hotel Location which is located near the mouth of the Fraser. Just a short ride out the north arm and we are fishing the mouth of the Fraser River.

Trout Fishing

Trout fishing has been fairly good this past week, all reports from Interior and local area have been encouraging. We are still offering trips into the Pitt River for sea-run trout and salmon are now beginning to make their way into the system. This river is all catch and release and offers great scenery and opportunity to view and experience the great outdoors. We will continue to offer Pitt trips through the summer until water levels become to low. August is a great month for both salmon and trout.

This beauty was caught last week but one of our out of town guests.

Hells Gate Jet Boat Tours.

We are getting geared up for the start of our Canyon tour season, we still have some seats available for August 12 & 18, please give us a call or e-mail to book your day on the water with us.

Fishing Report for June 28-July 14

Fishing Update for June 28 – July 14

Fraser River Salmon & Sturgeon

The big news this week is the Fraser River , high water is a real concern for farmers who live in low lying areas but other than that I don’t think you need to worry too much about flooding as the water has been this high many times. Media love to over react as this brings in many readers and listeners to their shows. At Mission Harbour we are expecting the river to peak this weekend and then begin to drop rapidly. We should see the river in decent shape for the July 16 salmon opening.

Fraser River Salmon –

As mentioned above, Salmon fishing opens July 16 on the Fraser River, water will be high but we should see decent water conditions by early August. There are a few places to target salmon if the water stays high, mouth of Vedder River is one good bet. We will also be targeting salmon in the ocean and several smaller rivers located in the valley. Target species will be Chinook Salmon and Possibly some sockeye.

Fraser River Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing has been fair to good this past week even with the high water. One local guide landed a fish over 9ft this week which is a great fish for this time of year. Best bait has been Eulichon and eel, look for salmon eggs to begin producing some nice fish. Primetime Sturgeon fishing is approaching fast, August, Sept, October and November offer some of the best fishing of the year. We still have some good dates available so just give us a call and we will hook you up with that monster sturgeon.

Vancouver Salmon Fishing

We have spent the last few days over at Gulf Islands, fishing has been slower this week with the odd Chinook over 20lbs being landed. Over the next few weeks we will begin to see some better local fishing with Capliano coho and Fraser River Chinook beginning to arrive. As we get closer to mid July the Fraser sockeye should begin to show up so lots of options for our guests. We are now offering 1/2 day salmon 1/2 day sturgeon out of our Delta Airport location so you can experience both fresh and saltwater fishing in same trip. This is a great option if the weather gets nasty or you limit our on salmon early. You must book an 8 hour trip if you want to do a combo salmon/sturgeon.

Pitt River Trout Fishing

We have been on the Pitt all week, water was really high early in the week but has since begun to drop. We had some great trips both fly and gear landing trout between 2 to 9 lbs. Water is in great shape so looks like we will have some excellent fishing opportunities over the next 3 weeks. If you are wanting to get out on the Pitt, please call Tom at 604-807-4819 or Thomas at 604-308 – 5591 as I will be away fishing the west coast for the next two weeks..

Surprise steelhead caught while fishing the Pitt this week.

Lots of fish this size being caught right now
