Sept 26 update

I am having a hard time finding the words to describe the fishing right now, it’s not great, it’s not terrible, it’s just okay I guess. The salmon are Coho and Chinook Salmon fishing has been good one day, shitty the next, Sturgeon fishing has been much the same. Over the next few weeks we should see some great improvement on salmon numbers in the Fraser , Vedder, Chehalis and other local streams. See below for more detailed report.

Here is a nice 7ft sturgeon caught recently while fishing the canyon with Vic Carrao of STS.

Sturgeon fishing

Best way to describe the fishing right now is inconsistent, lots of fish rolling and jumping, the occasional hook up but man are we working hard for our fish. A few days ago we had a large corporate group out, 80 anglers, 61 sturgeon landed, 21 fish over 5 ft, 8 over 6ft and 2 over 7ft. Not bad for a 6 hour trip but most of these fish came at the high tide so we did go a few hours hoping for a bite.

This is a nice 6ft 2 we landed yesterday

The past few days we have seen a few larger fish caught in the Mission area, lamprey, salmon meat and eggs have all produced some nice fish but again we are working very hard for every fish. Lots of drops with no bites then suddenly we hook 4 in one spot. From talking to other anglers and guides, everyone is having the same experience.

Fraser Valley Salmon-

Mouth of the Vedder is producing some nice coho but only issue is getting into the canal at low tide. The lower canal area is filling up with sand and silt so at low tide only the small car toppers are getting in. The larger boats must wait for the incoming tide and make sure you get out before the tide gets too low.

The Fraser is also producing some nice Chinook , Tony Reid of Mission did well this week fishing the bars below the Harrison River. Most anglers are plunking spin n glos or T-Spoons, either one will work but last week Tom did best with spin n glos. As water clarity continues to improve, fly and spoons will begin to work best.

I am heading out this morning to chuck spoons and flys on the Fraser so we will see how it is.

Vedder River is super low and clear, anglers are getting some nice coho at first light but then it is dead. Once we get some rain we will see a big blow out then fishing will turn right on. My only fear is that once the rain starts, it will never stop and water clarity will be an issue. Lets cross our fingers and hope for the best.

I will be fishing the lower end of the river today so we will see how it is, if anything crazy happens i will post a new report.

Have a great day and enjoy the weather while it lasts

Sept 13 Update

Fraser Valley Update for Sept – November 2012

The Fraser Valley offers some of the best fishing opportunities between September & November. This is when the local salmon rivers like the Vedder, Harrison, Chehalis, Dewdney begin to get their fall returns. All these fish travel up the Fraser past our front door in Mission and head for their home waters. The area between Mission and Harrison Confluence offers some great salmon and sturgeon fishing. October and November are our two best months with lots of great fishing to be had.

We usually start the day with salmon and end with some sturgeon drops. Some guests prefer to fish sturgeon all day and we are good with that too. Fly fishers can target Chinook and Coho between middle of September to middle of October, then the Chum move in. We also like to Plunk big Tee Spoons for those Harrison Chinook, last year we did great right through to about Oct 22 then it died off for Chinook.

For anglers wanting to cast spoons and spinners, there is no better time or place than the Fraser river in October. We fish all the bars top to bottom covering lots of water for both Coho and Chinook. Last year we had some great results from late September through until late October. We still have some good weekday availability for October but weekends are getting tight.

This past week we have seen a significant change in water clarity and action on the bar rods, the past two days we have hooked 12 Chinook a couple Coho and even a steelhead. This plunking style of fishing is very productive and nothing is more fun than seeing your rod tip buried into the water.

Plunking is basically bar fishing from the boat, a little lighter gear is used and hook up are more aggressive.

Below is a nice steelhead caught on Sept 12 , 2012 while bar fishing the Fraser

Don’t overlook the first week of November, I and many of my guides think that this might just be one of the best weeks of the season. Year after year we see the same consistent results. Sturgeon fishing is usually on fire, some great fly and spoon fishing on the Harrison for Coho and the Stave and lower fraser get their last push of chrome silver Chum. My top two choices would be between Oct 24-30 or Nov 1-10.

Pitt River Coho

Pitt River bound Coho begin to migrate in late September with peak fishing between Oct 10 to 30. You can pick up some good fishing in early October but fish usually start to stack up in runs by the 10th of October. We have added a new fly fishing guide to our roster who runs the perfect Pitt River Jet Sled. Trips up to the Pitt for fly fishing for Coho will be offered all Fall and Trout fishing is still offered year round.

Fraser River Sturgeon fishing is at Its best

October & November are by far the best two month for sturgeon fishing on the Fraser. The area between Chilliwack and Mission produces some of the best results found anywhere on the Fraser River. Many of the trophy sturgeon pictures you see on the internet are caught in Mission area during this time period. Some of the larger 10-11ft sturgeons are usually caught in this time period.

Here is an 11ft 4 inch ( fork length) well over 13ft caught by STS Guide Tom Pearce while fishing in Mission area. This fish was caught in October.

Vancouver Island West Coast Salmon & Halibut Fishing 2013

Come join us for some of the best fishing the west coast has to offer at our new Whales Reach Lodge.

Whales Reach Lodge is located just 20 km west from Port Hardy in the remote Village of Coal Harbour. This small native village is nestled in the coastal mountains on the northern tip of Vancouver Islands West Coast. Coal Harbour lies in the protected waters of Quatsino Sound that leads west to Winter Harbour 1 hour away by boat. This area is filled with some of the best and fertile ocean waters found anywhere in the world. Abundant salmon like Chinook and Coho, halibut, ling cod, snapper, black bass and the list goes on.

The protected waters in Quatsino sound offer anglers the great west coast fishing without having to run 20 miles off the coast in rough seas. Chinook and Coho can be found on the inside and just off shore near Winter Harbour. Halibut grounds can be found within eyesight of shore so again a great opportunity to fish in calmer seas while still hammering on fish.

When you arrive we get you checked in, quick snack, then we hit the water for the afternoon fish. Upon return we have a sea-food dinner and bonfire in the lodge firepitt. Day 2 & 3 are full days on the water departing at 5am, the last day your back at the Marina between 11 – 12pm. All your fish will be cleaned and packaged, vacuum sealing is available at extra cost.
