Oct 19 Fishing Update

Fishing for both salmon and sturgeon has been good to excellent this past week. The Coho fishing has been nothing short of excellent and more Chum Salmon are entering the river with each high tide. See below for detailed report.

Salmon fishing for Coho and Chum Salmon has been very good to excellent, The Vedder River, Harrison River, Chehalis and Stave River are all producing results. The Harrison and Vedder have been a pleasant surprise producing some big Coho both hatchery and Wild.

Many of our guests are fly fishing for salmon but we are also targeting them with spoons and jigs. My favorite is the GibbsDelta collection of spoons. There is a spoon for every situation including fishing super shallow water where Coho like to hide. The GibbsDelta collection includes casting lures like the Koho, Ironhead and my favorite the Croc. With over 600 sizes and colors there is a spoon for every situation. The trick is to retrieve the lure very slow, remember it is not a spinner, it is a spoon which requires a slow retrieve.

Sturgeon fishing has been good to excellent as we are now into our final stretch of the Fall Fishery. There is still lots of time to book a trip and get out onto the water. Primetime is now through until middle to end of November so it’s never too late. Give us a call 604-671-3474

Best baits right now will be fresh salmon eggs, stink bait (rotten salmon) and lamprey but #1 will be fresh Chum eggs which can be purchased at any local tackle store in the Fraser Valley. Try calling Chilliwack Dart and Tackle, Sea-Run Tackle or if you live near Richmond, Berry’s Bait.

We still have some amazing fishing ahead of us, if you are looking for a last minute trip, e-mail us at sts or call us 604-671-3474

Hope you have a great weekend

Sept 29 Fishing Update

This past week has been fair to good for both salmon and sturgeon, we are still working hard for our fish but if you are willing to put the time in, the rewards have been great. The Fraser closes for salmon fishing at the end of today and will re-open towards the end of October. The good news is that we can fish salmon on the Harrison, Stave and Sumas which is just starting to see some fish migrate into those rivers.

We have been targeting Coho in several tributaries having some good success casting GibbsDelta spoons. Our favorite is the Hammered Brass Red Fire Stripe but any of the croc colors will work once you have found the fish. I also like casting the GibbsDelta Colorado blades especially in shallow water like you will find in the Sumas Canal or lower Vedder Canal. We will continue to offer our salmon/sturgeon combo trips right through until the end of the season as more fish continue to migrate into these local rivers.

The GibbsDelta Ironhead and Ultra Lures also work well for Coho as seen in this pic, the key is having the correct retrieval speed, slow, slow and slower.

Sturgeon fishing is picking up again, still working hard for our fish but they are plenty of fish out there to catch. Best baits have been Lamprey, Salmon Eggs and Sockeye heads but you can throw just about anything at them right now, you just need to find feeding sturgeon and drop the bait on their nose.

Local rivers like the Vedder, Harrison and Chehalis are all producing salmon catches right now, if your heading onto local flows, try float fishing with the GibbsDelta Colorado blades under the float, it works well especially at first light or late evening before the sun goes down. There is still some great fishing to come so get them rods out of the closet and enjoy the great salmon fishing to come.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Tight lines

Sept 22 Fishing update

The Fraser River has had a banner year for sockeye, even today the Fraser is still teaming with sockeye headed up river to spawn. This late run is mostly Adams River and other smaller local tributaries. Currently the Fraser River is closed to sockeye fishing to protect these fish which means no bottom bouncing with a long leader. There is some excellent bar fishing going on right now and you can also target them using spoons or fly fishing.

Some of our best salmon fishing is yet to come, October is our best month on the Fraser for salmon fishing, we can target Coho, Chinook and Chum salmon using fly, spoon, bar fish or float fish. You can also fish the Harrison River for the same species, again, using fly, spoon or float. If your fishing the Vedder, Chehalis or other local tribs, floating fishing is the most popular.

Here is a beautiful Sturgeon landed today by our guests from Long Beach California. This giant measured 9ft 5 with a 55 inch girth. Fishing for sturgeon has been a bit spotty as of late, and some areas of the river have been extremely slow. These fish have been feeding on sockeye salmon for the past 2 months so a slow down was expected.

I think we just might have just turned a corner as we have seen some good fishing the past 24 hours, STS guide Doug Elias also landed a fish over 9ft today in fact it was bigger measuring 9ft 6inch with a 50 inch girth. Doug captured this monster near Mission City where we have been guiding for over 24 years. Right now we are throwing just about everything at them, lamprey, salmon eggs, sockeye meat, gills, heads etc. The key is finding feeding fish, lots of drops for short periods, most fish are coming in the first 5 minutes of a drop.

I know it’s been a while since I posted a fishing report, after 24 years I think I needed a break. I have been focusing on keeping healthy and working hard up in the canyon. It’s been an amazing season for Renee and I so far, great guests and some amazing fish. My schedule is slowing down a bit so hopefully I have a bit more time to keep the report up to date. I have one Sunday left for our Canyon Trip, October 7 is still available, you can call or e-mail us if you would like to book.

We still have lots of great dates for 6 and 8 hour charters or multi-day packages, email us at sts

FREE DRAW

We are doing a Free Draw on our facebook page, I have some Gibbs/Delta STS UV Glo Flashers to give away as well as some Scotty Rod Holders. Just go to www.facebook.com/stsguiding and like and share our page and post. If you tag a friend they will also be entered to win.

Over the next 7-10 days we will start seeing more Chinook , Coho and Chum Salmon and less sockeye salmon in the Fraser. We still have a couple more unstable days of weather then the sunshine is expected all next week with highs of 24 which is beautiful. The Fraser is currently rising from all the rain but by Tuesday it will be in great shape.

Get out there and give it a try, this has been an amazing season for both salmon and sturgeon and some of the best is yet to come. Tight lines and see you on the water.

Have a great week
